Last week, I shared with you my goal for 2025 ~ “Create a Life You Can’t Wait to Wake Up To.” I don’t know about you, but for me, waking up in a calm, decluttered space is the best way to begin my day. We all have clutter in varying degrees, and I love any opportunity to learn new tips and techniques for taming the clutter to create a calm space.
I am so excited to partner with my friend, Trish Hodson, Professional Organizer and owner of Bee Organized San Francisco Bay, for a two-part series on Elevating our Calm Space in 2025.
Trish is going to kick things off today by showing us how clutter affects our quality of life. Then, she’s going to help us set the right mindset and introduce strategies for tackling our clutter.
The Bee Organized website has an Organizing Profile Quiz that helps us understand “Who we are in our relationship with our Stuff”. In all of my years of cleaning out my stuff, and my love of organizing my spaces, I have NEVER thought about this!! Trish’s company helps us recognize that by understanding our relationship with our stuff and our behaviors around it, we can begin to make lasting changes. Mic Drop.
Take the quiz. Trust me. It is eye-opening, AND it is making me reflect on all of my quirky stuff-saving habits. I’ll reveal my Organizing Profile results in tomorrow’s post.

They say your home is your sanctuary, a place to feel safe, calm and be restored. How do you feel when you come home? Does your home bring you peace, relaxation, inspiration, creativity? Or does your mood shift if you see disarray with dirty dishes, heaps of laundry, and piles of clutter on every surface? If you’re honest with yourself, most of us would agree that a cluttered and disorderly home can be a joy sucker. Experts on the topic go as far as stating that clutter not only affects our mood, but it can impact our anxiety levels, sleep, ability to focus, productivity and our general health. Who knew clutter came with such a hefty price tag!
As professional organizers, we have seen firsthand the damaging effect that clutter can have on a home and the well-being of the family living within. So many of us are living in physical clutter which is stressing us out, draining our energy, and simply wreaking havoc in our daily lives. AND there is good news…WE CAN gain back control of our home, clear the clutter, and improve our mental health and well-being.
Here are some simple tips to clear the clutter and create space that supports positive mental health in your home:
When our internal selves feel stressed, chaotic or unstable, it can be very helpful and beneficial for our mental wellbeing to establish external order. Recognizing that the clutter surrounding you may be causing you stress is the first step towards change.
Set small, realistic and attainable goals for yourself so that success is likely and confidence can be built.
When life feels crazy and out of control (because so much is out of our control!), find something small that you can take control of and stick to it. Choose a small area of your home or a part of your daily routine to master and take pride in that.
If possible, focus on order in your bedroom first, the place where you start and end each day. Think of this as the most important place in your home, a place for daily restoration, relaxation and peace.
Remember that having order, organization systems, and structure as a family unit, benefits the mental health and wellness of ALL members, no matter their age.
Let yourself enjoy the transformed space! Never underestimate the power of a clean surface or an organized space on your mood!
There’s no denying that the link between clutter and mental health is real. Always remember to be good to yourself, give yourself grace and starting small is better than not starting at all.

I love that Trish begins by helping us to establish the right mindset to start what can be a daunting task. Not only that, she encourages us to show ourselves grace. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been deep in one of my closet organization project, and I started beating myself up with thoughts like “How did I let it get this bad?”, “Why did I buy all this crap?”, and “I’ll never finish this.” So, thank you, Trish, for reminding us to show ourselves grace and to bask in the satisfaction of completing every single task.
Even if you only have time to tackle one single drawer that day – savor the feeling of accomplishment over how great that drawer looks, and how much more functional it is! One small change can lead to further big changes. Creating order from chaos feels good, and it can spill over into how we approach most areas of our life.
Today, we learned the mindset we need to Elevate our Calm Space . . .
Tomorrow, we are going to learn HOW to tame our clutter and create a system for organization that WORKS!
You are definitely going to want to check back here tomorrow when Trish will teach us the specific tips and techniques that she uses, as a Professional Organizer, to organize everything from a single pantry to an entire home.
